OSHA Regulations, their related Consensus Standards and the Hazards they were designed to address will be covered during the first two weeks of this course. During Week 1 we will cover “workplace safety” and the focus will be on the hazards and the incidents [accidents] they can cause which mostly result in “injuries” to the outer parts of the body. During Week 2, the focus will be on “workplace health,” the hazards and the incidents [accidents] they can cause that mostly result in “illnesses” to the inner parts of the body, but also some injuries as well.
During Week 1 and Week 2 we will also take a look at “consensus standards” that are directly related to OSHA regulations and are developed by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). OSHA regulations describe “what” is required and consensus standards detail “how” to implement what is required.
Also during Week 1 and Week 2, regarding the hazards mentioned above, we will be covering hazard identification, evaluation, control and prevention. Hazard identification, evaluation, control and prevention are basically the foundations of workplace safety and health. Hazard Identification will be introduced during Week 1. Incident prevention starts with identifying hazards that are present or could be present in the workplace that can cause harm. After hazards have been identified, they need to be evaluated in order to effectively determine control and prevention methods, which will be covered in-depth in Week 2.
