Week 5 Discussion: Effective Safety and Health Programs

industrial workplace

“Best Practices” and “Continuous Improvement” are very common and highly-effective incident [accident] prevention methods. Best Practices in workplace safety are normally policies, procedures and/or work processes that employers have implemented that “go beyond compliance,” which means they are going above and beyond what is required by OSHA to keep their workplaces safe and as result they have very few, if any, accidents each year. Continuous Improvement in workplace safety means that employers regularly monitor the effectiveness and sustainability of the methods they have implemented in their workplaces to meet OSHA requirements and prevent incidents. Based on the results of this monitoring, companies then make adjustments and enhancements so that their methods for OSHA compliance and accident prevention continue to be effective and sustainable. Continuous improvement results in fewer and no accidents as well. Companies who have achieved low or zero accident occurrences due to implementing best practices and engaging in continuous improvement did not get there overnight. It is a long process and can take years. It is a “journey.” Many companies share their journeys on their websites so that other companies can learn from them and start on a path to fewer and no accidents as well.

This assignment draws from all of the Week 5 learning materials.

Discussion: In your initial post for Wednesday, research any general industry employer who has an excellent reputation for workplace safety and health. Summarize their journey to “safety excellence,” including the state of their workplace safety before they decided to improve their workplace safety, what they did to improve it and the state of their workplace safety now. Provide one additional recommendation that you would have made to improve their workplace safety. Discuss why you chose that recommendation.

Response : In two responses to your peers, due by Sunday, regarding the initial recommendation that was provided in the initial post, discuss an example of this recommendation you are familiar with in your current or a previous workplace and describe the positive impact it has made on your current or a previous workplace. If your current or a previous workplace does not have examples of this recommendation, discuss how you would like to see this recommendation implemented at your current or a previous workplace and the positive impacts it would make if it were implemented at your current or a previous employer. If you’ve never been employed, you can speak with someone you know who is employed and use their employer for this assignment.
